About the Work
The original painting, Demonstrating Descartes’ Error: The Body Is the Mind at the Ladies’ Pond, Hampstead Heath, was exhibited and sold at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2026.
Painted in oil on a found book cover, it brings together Vanessa Brassey’s lifelong love of Hampstead Heath and the distinctive world of the Ladies’ Pond. It also gently challenges Descartes’ idea that the mind and body are entirely separate. Vanessa holds a PhD in Philosophy and now explores some of these questions through paint as well as writing.

About the Artist
 
Vanessa Brassey is a figurative and landscape artist working across oil painting, encaustic wax, film, animation, and porcelain. Her work has also appeared in the Jackson’s Art Prize 2025, the ING Discerning Eye in 2024 and 2025, the Women in Art Finalists Exhibition 2023, and the Beep Painting Biennial 2022.
