I am a London based contemporary painter and philosopher. I work primarily in oils, painting people, landscapes and the everyday rituals through which our lives acquire meaning.

Much of my recent work has grown out of swimming on Hampstead Heath. The ponds and lido offer an endlessly changing theatre of bodies, weather, colour and human behaviour. I am drawn to the peculiar mixture of intimacy and anonymity found there: people briefly sharing a place and a ritual before disappearing back into their separate lives.

I paint from life, photographs, memory and film. I am not interested in straightforward naturalism, but in what a painting can hold beyond the immediately visible: a remembered sensation, an atmosphere, the residue of an encounter or the suggestion that something has just happened, or is about to.

My background in philosophy inevitably finds its way into the studio, although I do not set out to illustrate philosophical ideas. I am interested in how pictures represent time, how they convey private sensations like joy, sadness or nostalgia, and why a still image can seem alive with movement, memory and anticipation.

For several years I taught and published academic philosophy. I now work out many of those ideas through painting, film and creative collaboration. I am a Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College London and Co Director of the Centre for Philosophy and Art, where I develop projects with artists, philosophers and museums. My public work has included films and events and programme contributions with the National Gallery, the British Society of Aesthetics, Shakespeare’s Globe and Sir John Soane’s Museum.

But mostly, I find paintings beautiful to look at, and wonderfully difficult to make. I tend to think of myself as a recovering philosopher working out their sobriety by making art.

My work has been exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the ING Discerning Eye and Unit 1 Gallery | Workshop, and I was a finalist in Jackson’s Art Prize in 2025. In 2023, Brisk and Early Morning Swim at the Ladies Pond was exhibited at the Roundhouse as part of the Women in Art Prize finals. The painting subsequently appeared in the film We Live in Time, starring Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield. I will on appear on Sky Portrait Artist of The Year series 13 in Autumn 2026.
