The Past is All Ahead of You (2025)
Exhibited for the first time at Shapeshifters, this painting forms part of the new series The Past is All Ahead of You (2025). It holds a tentative hope for the future, while recognising that the future is always shaped by what has been.
Set in Italian and African landscapes first made familiar through novels and later through family holidays, the scene evokes the quiet unease of adulthood edging toward retirement — that sense that, despite experience and knowledge, the world only seems to grow more difficult to understand.
In these hazy phases, there is comfort in returning — again and again — to the past:
to versions of once-real things, and to places that only memory can make whole.
